Halloween is a fun and whimsical time of year. Creative costumes, pumpkin carving, and of course, candy, are big hits with the little ones (and some parents!). We love the holiday so much that Americans spent around $8 billion on Halloween in 2016!

For older participants, Halloween might consist of passing out candy or watching a scary movie at home. With the younger fanatics, particularly children, the best part of Halloween in the candy. For parents, however, Halloween can spell a stressful situation.

While a little bit of a sweet tooth isn’t too much to worry about, a few too many candies might mean a trip to the dentist somewhere down the line. Sugar, especially in sticky-sweet confections, can damage your teeth and gums, causing cavities or tooth decay in kids and adults. Avoid Sticky and Long-Lasting Candy

While about 90% of all foods contain some sugar or starch, some can be more harmful than others. Follow a Candy Plan

Don’t Use Candy As a Snack

It may seem harmless to enjoy a couple of pieces a day between meals as a mid-day or midnight snack, but it is quite the opposite. Vitamin C. We know vitamin C is ideal for getting rid of cold because of its antibacterial properties, but chewing a vitamin C pill daily can also reduce swelling, receding and bleeding in your gums as well. Just don’t go overboard – too much acid in your diet can wear teeth enamel.

Dental Emergency: When It Hurts to Brush Your Teeth | Skiatook Dentist

From toothaches to broken or missing teeth, having pain in our mouth isn’t exactly a rare occasion. When it gets bad, we make an appointment to see a dentist. But what do we do while we are waiting to see them? Pain management is generally done with pain medications and/or icing the area, but what if it hurts to brush your teeth as well? Most will bypass the extra pain until our appointment, but there is something you can do to keep up your dental hygiene while you wait… 

Skip flossing. Sometimes flossing can increase the pain, especially if the pain is being caused by something is stuck inside one of your cavities, stabbing you from the inside. If it hurts too much to floss, then it’s not worth it.

Use your finger. Your fingers won’t hurt as much as a brush might. Apply a little bit of toothpaste on your finger and smear it around your teeth, then spit it out. Something is better than nothing.

Rely on the rinse. If worse comes to worse and both of these suggestions hurt too much, rely on rinsing your mouth out with water, after every meal. It will help to clean your teeth as far as clearing out any loose debris. It’s not ideal, but leaving any residue on your teeth gives bacteria more time to move in on your teeth, causing cavities.

What you should know about Periodontal Disease

In America, periodontitis affects as many as half of the Americans over the age of 30, according to the research performed by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, back in 2013. This means that in the United States of America alone, over 64 million people have periodontitis. The number, though, isn’t the alarming part, because what’s alarming is that they’re suffering from periodontitis, which, if you already don’t know, is an advanced form of periodontal disease.
What does this mean? This means that millions of Americans and, quite probably, hundreds of millions of people from around the globe suffer from a disease that could’ve easily been prevented if acted on early on.

What Is Periodontal Disease?

Gingivitis is one of the earliest forms of periodontal disease and it mainly affects the gums. If left unchecked and untreated, the bacteria may irritate the gums, making it swell and become inflamed. The gums may turn bright red or purple, which is your body’s way of responding to the presence of the bacteria. But, since your body is unable to remove it on its own, the condition grows worse and this is when periodontitis occurs.
Once this happens, the gums are slowly eaten away. The gums then start pulling away from your teeth and erode. Eventually, the teeth will fall out. Your jaw bones may also be affected adversely and become weakened because of this.
If the condition grows even worse, it becomes Chronic Periodontitis. This stage is particularly troublesome because some of its effects may already be beyond repair. Even worse is that it has a tendency to come right back after being cured.
Now, regardless of the severity, periodontal disease in any form should be taken seriously and warrants medical attention.

Prevention is better than Cure

The best way to prevent periodontal disease is by taking proper care of your teeth. The two best ways to do this is to make a habit out of brushing and flossing your teeth regularly. Also, floss before you brush as this helps loosen up the food particles in between your teeth so that you can just brush it away.
For parents, establishing a solid oral care routine in your children early on is important. Teach them the right way to brush and floss their teeth. Don’t be afraid to teach them what food items are bad for their teeth and why.
More importantly, visit the dentist regularly. The more you spend on regular dental checkups, the less likely you’ll spend a lot more later on for more serious complications.
